In 2014, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) purchased 89 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered heavy-duty buses.  This is in addition to the 266 CNG heavy-duty buses that MARTA has purchased since 1996.  This means that 355 out of the 531 buses employed on MARTA bus routes are powered by compressed natural gas.  Operating on CNG over diesel allows MARTA to reduce petroleum/oil use by 7 million gallons per year.

MARTA’s electric rail service and bus fleet help to significantly reduce congestion (and the emissions produced from it) in the Atlanta area.
